We went out across the college and asked about audience expectations of an opening sequence. Lots of these video's turned out to be unusable, but we have uploaded some of these responses to the blog:
Ben believes the audience should be introduced to the main characters at the very least and mentions the importance of a clearly demonstrated conflict/theme. He also said that he expects a film to grab his attention within the first five/ten minutes.
Julian clearly expects much of a film's opening. He regurgitated Ben's idea of the main themes/overall tone being introduced early on in a film and says a film should establish both a setting and location within the first scene.
He expects too much of us.
Aisha's talking head said that she has a particular penchant for films like Memento or Swordfish where the ending is shown right from the beginning. She also thinks that with an opening sequence, rather than a simple title sequence there should at the very least be a scene before the actual film begins (I think this is called a cold opening?)
